Christy McSweeney
Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Cybersecurity
Christy McSweeney graduated from Arizona State University (ASU) in 2020, amid the upheaval and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. With a degree in Forensic Psychology, her plans to enter law enforcement were derailed by a near-global hiring freeze. Dissatisfied with her healthcare customer service job — a position she held throughout college and continued out of necessity after graduation — Christy made a pivotal decision to return to her studies. This choice, along with the serendipitous discovery of a cybersecurity training advertisement, ultimately led her to uncover a newfound passion and embark on a lucrative career path.
Christy is a proud 2023 graduate of the SANS.edu Applied Cybersecurity Certificate program. Today, she serves as a Senior Information Security Consultant at Allianz Life, a leading national provider of retirement solutions based in Minnesota. In this account, Christy shares her journey to SANS.edu, her experiences as a SANS student, and her transition into a successful cybersecurity career. She hopes that her story will offer valuable insights for others considering a similar path.
Q. How did you get interested in cybersecurity?
A: Working in healthcare left me unfulfilled, so I decided to explore other options and stumbled upon cybersecurity. It wasn't offered as a degree when I was an undergraduate, and I discovered it by accident while looking at technical programs. The term "cybersecurity" caught my attention — it sounded intriguing and cool.
With a tech-savvy dad and friends in the field, I grew more curious. I researched the field, its job prospects, and began hands-on experiences with TryHackMe and Hack The Box. My dad, recognizing SANS' reputation, recommended it to me. After speaking with someone from SANS, I decided that the Applied Cybersecurity certificate program was the perfect next step.
Q. What does your role as Senior Information Security Consultant entail?
A. My job focuses on cybersecurity awareness and training. My colleagues and I create and implement activities to engage employees and increase their awareness of cybersecurity. This includes developing interactive and fun methods, such as games and events, to make the learning process more engaging than just an annual compliance training session.
For example, we organized a phishing tournament where employees compete to identify phishing emails, with prizes for those who perform well. This not only makes the training more enjoyable but also encourages vigilance and active participation. My colleagues and I are constantly thinking of new ways to keep people interested and informed about cybersecurity.
Secondarily, I also advise the company on cybersecurity measures.
Q. What do you like most about cybersecurity?
A. What I love most about cybersecurity is how it's always evolving. There's always something new and exciting on the horizon. For example, just last week, we had an AI panel as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, discussing how AI and cybersecurity are evolving together.
It's fascinating to see these changes and understand how they will shape the future. This constant evolution is precisely why I chose to pursue cybersecurity and enroll in SANS. The field never gets boring; there's always something new to learn, which can be challenging but is incredibly rewarding. I'm motivated to keep up with the latest developments because I find it all so interesting.
Q. In what ways has your healthcare experience been beneficial to your cybersecurity career?
A. My healthcare background has been incredibly beneficial to my cybersecurity career. In healthcare, I developed valuable soft skills such as effective communication and the ability to simplify complex topics for those without technical expertise. Explaining complicated medical terms to patients has translated well into cybersecurity, where I often function as a liaison, breaking down intricate cybersecurity concepts for non-tech-savvy individuals.
Additionally, my experience in healthcare compliance, particularly with HIPAA, has provided a strong foundation in understanding regulations and their importance. In both fields, clear communication, empathy, and a thorough understanding of compliance are crucial. The skills I've gained from managing HIPAA regulations have helped me grasp the significance of compliance in cybersecurity, especially in dealing with financial regulations. This background has equipped me to promote cybersecurity awareness and understanding effectively.
Q. How did you hear about SANS Technology Institute?
A. My dad, who has been in the technology industry for decades, recommended SANS to me, highlighting its strong reputation in the cybersecurity industry.
Q. Why did you choose to enroll in SANS Technology Institute certificate program?
A. At my father’s suggestion, I took the time to research SANS.edu and spoke with a representative who provided detailed information about their programs. They suggested that the Applied Cybersecurity certificate program would be a great fit for me.
While I did consider other programs, I realized that SANS offered far more advanced certifications at a comparable cost. Opting for SANS has provided me with a high-quality education and valuable credentials in the field.
Q. From your research how did the SANS program differ from other programs of its kind?
A. From my research, the SANS program stood out significantly compared to other programs. For the same amount of money, SANS offers multiple advanced courses and esteemed certifications, whereas other programs offer a single course and certification. SANS offers better value for the investment.
Q. How did you fund the program? What was your experience securing funding?
A. I was fortunate to have leftover funds in my college account, which I used to pay for my SANS.edu tuition. This made the funding process straightforward and stress-free for me.
Q. What did you find most valuable about the program?
A. The support and resources were invaluable. My advisor, Delisha, was phenomenal. She was constantly advocating for me and serving as a steadfast support throughout my journey.
Anytime I had an issue, Delisha was there to assist me, usually responding within an hour. Her guidance provided me with great opportunities, and I can't speak highly enough of her dedication and the wealth of resources available through the program.
Q. Did you take classes online or at live events? How was that experience?
A. I took all my classes online, which turned out to be a great decision for me personally. The flexibility allowed me to study at my own pace, which was particularly helpful as I was also working full-time.
While I think attending in-person classes would have been challenging under my circumstances, I am interested in participating in an in-person class with SANS.edu in the future. For now, the online format worked perfectly for me.
Q. Can you tell me about how the student advising experience at SANS.edu worked for you?
A. The support I received from my Delisha was exceptional. I've never had an experience where I felt so well-guided. Delisha's insights made a significant difference in my journey.
Q. How has the SANS.edu Career Center helped you in your search for jobs?
A. The SANS.edu Career Center was instrumental in helping me secure my first job in cybersecurity, specifically in a Security Operations Center (SOC). They provided crucial support to get my foot in the door, which allowed me to gain invaluable experience. This role not only helped me grow in cybersecurity but also significantly improved my technical skills, which is essential since I didn't have a tech background before. SANS.edu Career Center’s guidance and resources were pivotal to my career development.
Q. How have your SANS.edu certifications impacted your career trajectory?
A. My SANS.edu certifications have significantly impacted my career trajectory. Employers immediately recognize the value of GIAC certifications like GSEC (Security Essentials). They understand the rigorous education and comprehensive knowledge these certifications represent.
The reputation of SANS.edu speaks volumes, and the certifications are known for their dense, challenging material. Having these credentials shows employers that I am well-prepared and knowledgeable in cybersecurity. It’s a mark of credibility and expertise that has opened many doors for me in the industry.
Q. What advice would you offer someone considering applying to the SANS Technology Institute?
A. Be prepared for a firehose of information. It's going to be overwhelming, especially if you don't come from a tech background. It's important to utilize your resources, ask questions, and understand that it's okay to not know everything. Personally, I felt incredibly intimidated when I first started. The imposter syndrome is real and it's something many of us face. Don't be afraid of it. Use your resources and know that it's okay to feel overwhelmed. Do your best, and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it. These strategies will help you navigate the challenges and grow in your cybersecurity journey.
Q. What’s next for you?
A. In the future, I see myself in a leadership role. I aim to continue taking SANS courses. I hope to make a meaningful impact among my colleagues and within my industry and beyond.
