Q. How did you get interested in cybersecurity?
A. I became interested in cybersecurity a bit later in life, well into my adult years. In 2015, while I was still serving in the Marine Corps, I considered going back to school for a career change. I realized that I wanted to pursue something that involved technology, strategy, and protecting others — values that are important to me.
During my service, I held various roles, including being an embassy security guard in Italy and Venezuela. Although I was a hobbyist who enjoyed building computers, it never occurred to me to pursue a career in cybersecurity because I wasn't very familiar with the field. At the age of 24, I started researching potential career paths and noticed that IT and cybersecurity were among the fastest-growing industries.
In 2017, I began to seriously define my criteria for my next career move, and cybersecurity quickly stood out as the perfect fit. By 2018, I had completed my service and was ready to embark on my new journey in the field of cybersecurity. Now, I'm dedicated to protecting information and using my skills to make a positive impact.
Q. What does your current position as a cybersecurity technologist entail?
A. In my current role as a cybersecurity technologist for an insurance company, I focus on governance, risk, and compliance (GRC). My work involves supporting various cybersecurity initiatives within these three areas.
In the realm of governance, I help establish policies and procedures that guide our cybersecurity practices. For risk management, I advise internal and external parties of identified potential threats and vulnerabilities and recommend mitigation strategies. Compliance involves ensuring that both our internal practices and those of our vendors meet regulatory requirements and industry standards.
For example, when assessing vendor cybersecurity, I evaluate their practices across multiple domains, including networking, programming, and incident response. This holistic approach ensures that our vendors maintain robust security measures, ultimately protecting our sensitive information and maintaining our company's integrity.
By staying vigilant and proactive in these areas, I help safeguard our organization's data and contribute to a secure and resilient cybersecurity posture.
Q. What do you like most about cybersecurity?
A. There are two main aspects I love about cybersecurity. First, the challenge it presents. This field is constantly evolving, and I find myself learning something new every month. The rapid advancements keep me on my toes and push me to improve my skills and knowledge.
Second, the purpose behind the work. I've come to understand how valuable information is in our modern world — it's almost like currency. Being in cybersecurity means I'm responsible for protecting this valuable asset. Knowing that my work helps safeguard sensitive information gives me a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment.
The combination of intellectual challenge and meaningful impact makes cybersecurity incredibly rewarding for me.
Q. Prior to attending the SANS Technology Institute, what was your educational background?
A. After high school, I joined the service, which provided me with valuable skills and experiences. Upon completing my service, I attended Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), where I earned a bachelor’s degree in management information systems. My time at CCSU solidified my interest in technology and its applications.
Afterward, I pursued an undergraduate certificate program in applied cybersecurity with SANS.edu. This program further honed my skills and prepared me for a career in the ever-evolving field of cybersecurity. My educational journey has equipped me with a solid foundation in both management information systems and cybersecurity.
