Keegan Hamlin

Bachelor's Degree in Applied Cybersecurity

Keegan Hamlin’s journey in the United States Air Force began in 2010. Initially working in aircraft maintenance for nine years, Keegan found himself yearning for a change. While he didn’t dislike his job, he couldn’t envision doing it for the rest of his life. When the opportunity for retraining arose, Keegan seized it eagerly.

He embarked on a new path by enrolling in the six-month Cyber Warfare Operations Apprenticeship course offered by the military at the Kessler Air Force Base in Mississippi. This opportunity allowed him to transition into a new and exciting field of work within the military. Keegan’s determination to forge a new career path demonstrates the importance of adaptability and continuous learning in one’s professional journey.

In February 2024 at the age of 34, Keegan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Applied Cybersecurity from SANS.edu. Here he talks to us about his experience as a student at SANS.edu and provides insights for others thinking about taking a similar path.

“When evaluating SANS.edu alongside other comparable degree programs, I found its quality to be unmatched. The availability of on-demand courses and rolling admissions offered the flexibility I required. Moreover, the curriculum and instructors at SANS are truly exceptional.”

Q. How did you get interested in cybersecurity?

A. I’ve always loved computers. I used to build computers for fun. It took me quite a while to realize that a career in computer technology was in reach. I thought you had to be a super genius to work in technology. Once I started working at my current job in Cyber Warfare Operations, I discovered my aptitude for it and realized that this is where I belong!

Q. How did you learn about SANS.edu?

A. After my initial cybersecurity training from the Cyber Warfare Operations Apprenticeship course, I had the opportunity to enroll in SANS’ FOR508 Digital Forensics, Incident Response & Threat Hunting course at Hurlburt Air Force Base in Florida. The quality of the FOR508 course blew me away. That positive experience led me to explore other SANS courses. Initially, I thought SANS only offered certifications, but my Air Force colleague informed me about their bachelor’s and master’s programs. Without hesitation, I knew I wanted to be part of it.

Q. What is your current position? What does that entail?

A. I currently work in Cyber Warfare Operations for the United States Air Force. We conduct local and remote cyber warfare operations in garrison and deployed locations. The purpose of these operations is to defend national interests from attack and develop, sustain, and enhance cyberspace capabilities to achieve national objectives.

Q. What do you like most about cybersecurity?

A. The challenge! Cybersecurity is mentally stimulating, with continuous learning in a dynamic field. Plus, there are diverse opportunities for specialization — from forensics to red teaming and beyond.

Q. Prior to attending the SANS Technology Institute, what was your educational background?

A. After high school, I briefly attended college but struggled to find my passion. At age 20, I joined the United States Air Force. During my enlistment, I took sporadic college classes but lacked focus. Eventually, I earned an associate degree in aircraft maintenance from a community college. With the exception of the SANS FOR508 course, this summarizes my education before pursuing a SANS bachelor’s degree.

Q. Why did you choose to enroll in SANS Technology Institute program?

A. When evaluating SANS alongside other comparable degree programs, I found its quality to be unmatched. The availability of on-demand courses and rolling admissions offered the flexibility I required. Moreover, the curriculum and instructors at SANS are truly exceptional. Additionally, SANS enjoys a stellar reputation within the industry.

Q. What role did SANS.edu play in your career trajectory?

A. While my job is determined by the military, SANS.edu has been a game-changer for me. The degree and certifications I earned have boosted my confidence significantly. Now, I feel prepared to pursue roles that demand advanced skills, and certifications. I am even looking at commissioned officer positions. My SANS bachelor’s degree will make me far more competitive.

Q. How did you fund the program?

A. I used my GI bill to pay for my SANS.edu degree.

Q. What did you find most valuable about the program?

A. SANS courses address all learning styles. The curriculum, materials, and instruction were superb. However, it was the labs that I found truly remarkable. SANS invests significant effort in developing these labs, allowing hands-on practice in a curated environment that reinforces learning objectives. Many people appreciate this interactive approach. Additionally, I valued SANS’s on-demand learning option. Even though I took most classes online due to timing, the course quality remained high, and I didn’t feel like I missed anything.

Q. Can you tell me about your experience interning as an apprentice handler in the Internet Storm Center?

A. Interning as an apprentice handler at the Internet Storm Center (ISC) is a unique and rewarding experience. It was a fantastic way to finish off the SANS bachelor’s program. It provided valuable real-world experience. I was given a lot of freedom, using a little bit of everything that I learned in my courses. My work at the ISC showed me how far I had come and really gave me a sense of accomplishment and pride. And the internship mentors were great. They put a lot of work into the program and were super accessible and knowledgeable. They made this experience so much fun and so rewarding.

Q. Can you tell me about how the student advising experience at SANS.edu worked for you?

A. The student advisors were awesome. They treated us like adults. They provided an in-depth review of the program and set all of the expectations. They set me up for success and all I had to do was follow through. They were available when needed but unlike other student advising experiences, they were not breathing down my neck. Like the internship mentors, if I ever needed anything, the student advisors were readily available.

Q. What is your experience with Capture the Flag competitions?

A. I participated in three Capture the Flag competitions. They were a lot of fun. It was really cool getting to collaborate with other SANS students. And it gave me one more outlet to apply the lessons I learned while enrolled in SANS.edu. These competitions also give players a wonderful way to gauge how much they are improving from one tournament to the next.

Q. What advice would you offer someone considering applying to the SANS Technology Institute?

A. If you’re seeking top-notch cybersecurity training, I wholeheartedly recommend SANS’s bachelor’s and master’s programs. Success will require effective time management, goal-setting, and personal accountability. Familiarity with Python and basic coding is also beneficial before enrolling in the program.

Q. What’s next for you?

A. The Air Force has recently reintroduced the rank of warrant officer within the information technology and cyber fields. This move aims to maintain technical leadership with specialized skills. I intend to continue my career with the Air Force for at least another eight years, and I’m seriously considering applying to the warrant officer program.
